Microwave rice

We are currently in an apartment that has a stove but no gas, so our cooking options are limited. Luckily the microwave can double as a convection oven, so we have some options. However, we lack pots/pans so we're limited again to "big" Correlle serving bowls. Here is how I made rice in the microwave.
To make rice in the microwave, wash rice three times. I used filtered water, just in case, since I'm in India.

Make Microwave Rice

Add two parts water to the rinsed rice.
Toss with salt, lightly.
Microwave on high for 10 minutes.
Stir once.
Microwave for another 5 minutes.
Cover and allow water to absorb. Serve warm/hot. I served mine with dal, which I also made in the microwave.

I recently tried this on my own with Jasmine rice in an actual microwave bowl with a lid, which helps, but I cooked it for about 5 minutes until it boiled, and since I didn't have much room for it to boil and was afraid of it boiling over while I was preoccupied, I cut the power to 50% for 5 more minutes and then just let it sit for 10 minutes with the lid on, and it came out perfect! No sticking to the bottom of the pot like on the stove, and I could go off and do other stuff without forgetting to shut it off like I often manage to do! Microwaves are awesome if you don't try to use them like a standard oven...it's all about knowing it's differences. Trial and error mostly, but than goodness for the internet, right?
